December 13, 2018

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

On November 15, the Leadership Greater Washington Signature Class of 2019 visited several schools in the Washington region for its Education Day. Schools visited included the following:

Early Childhood & Elementary

Middle & High School

Class members explored factors limiting educational achievement and learned what local leaders are doing to ensure public education continues to be a vital part of a child's success. The experience also sought to provide a regional snapshot of challenges and opportunities along the education continuum (early childhood education through 12th grade).

The day began with a welcome from Jack McCarthy ('15), President & CEO of the AppleTree Institute, who gave an overview of the AppleTree Institute. Following the welcome, class members participated in discussion and report of the schools they visited by Jacquelyn Davis ('02), Partner, Human Capital, Education Forward DC. Education continued with Maura Marino Chief Executive Officer of Ed Forward DC sharing her knowledge about the regional landscape of education, which included a brief overview with data from around the region and an explanation about the difference between charter and traditional schools. The day progressed with a session dedicated to the tools and programs use to fill the education gap. Speakers included:

  • Stacy Burnette ('00), Senior Director, Government & Regulatory Affairs Comcast -- Internet Essentials
  • Karen Gardner (left), Sr. Executive Director, Reading Partners DC
  • Zack Jamison, Manager, Curriculum & Instruction Nationals Youth Baseball Academy
  • Nicole Lynn Lewis ('16), Founder & CEO, Generation Hope
  • Courtney Reeve ('13), Executive Director, Aspire! After School Learning

The conversation continued with a regional superintendents panel including Deputy Chancellor of Social, Emotional, and Academic Development for District of Columbia Public Schools, Melissa Kim, and the Interim CEO of Prince George's County Public Schools, Dr. Monica Goldson ('18) who shared their experiences as administrators in the Washington region.

LGW's Signature Education Day closed with a wrap of the day and a brief call to action about what can be done to improve educational inequity in our region.

Thank you to Comcast for sponsoring the event and AppleTree Institute for providing the venue.
