The Washington Metropolitan region will be a more dynamic and collaborative community with engaged leaders of diverse backgrounds, geographies, and sectors.


Established in 1986, Leadership Greater Washington was constructed by a group of regional leaders and three committed organizations: The Greater Washington Board of Trade, The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation and The Junior League of Washington. Modeling Leadership Greater Washington after other community leadership organizations, its founders invested personal and professional resources to fulfill their vision of an organization that would foster communication and cooperation among the area's established leaders.

While the first class began under the organizational name of Leadership Washington, the organization’s name was changed to Leadership Greater Washington in June of 2005 to better reflect its already regional focus.

Leadership Greater Washington is devoted to leaders in every stage of their leadership journey. In 1991, the Youth Leadership Greater Washington program was created to provide an interactive youth leadership development and community education program for high school sophomores and juniors in the Greater Washington region.  And in 2014, LGW launched the Rising Leaders program for regional leaders early in their career.

No other leadership organization crosses and conquers geographic and geopolitical barriers as Leadership Greater Washington, which serves more than 17 city and county governments in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. This gives way to cooperative work on a regional basis, fostering discussion, sparking problem-solving and motivating positive change to regional challenges, through Leadership Greater Washington's dynamic resources and programming efforts.
