For the February 28 installment of our Lessons in Leadership series, Steve Case, Chairman and CEO, Revolution; Founder and Partner, Revolution Growth; Co-Founder, America Online; and Chairman, Case Foundation, sat down with Richard Bynum ('13), PNC's President for Greater Washington & Virginia. In attendance were close to 100 visionary influencers from across the region.
Case, one of America's best-known entrepreneurs, retraced his journey to breakthrough leadership. From lessons learned through surfing in Hawaii as a youth, where he happened to attend high school with President Obama, to later founding AOL, the company that made the internet a part of everyday life. Case is currently focused on helping entrepreneurs, including some of the DC region's foremost startups. He has lived in Washington, DC for more than 30 years and is a passionate advocate for regional collaboration.

Some key takeaways from the day: Be patient: if your idea is worth believing in, perseverance is key. AOL took 10 years to scale before it revolutionized the internet. Be regional: for the DC region to become a hub for the technology industry, we must not compete across state lines. Be collaborative: collaboration is key. As the internet moves into the real world and the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes more pervasive we need to embrace strong partnerships and sound policy at the federal level. Be active locally: entrepreneurship is a team sport, and local initiatives should be supported because the next wave of major software companies will happen outside of Silicon Valley. Be strategic: vision without a plan for execution is not enough.
In partnership with PNC, Lessons in Leadership brings together vital leaders in our community to network with peers, tell the stories that shaped them as leaders, and to share insights into the successes inherent in leading with greater purpose, gratitude, integrity, and courage.
